Thailand’s Aggression at Ta Mone Thom Temple: A Dangerous Provocation Against Cambodian Sovereignty
Today, a deeply disturbing incident occurred along the Cambodia–Thailand border: a Thai citizen and a Thai soldier assaulted a Cambodian soldier stationed at the sacred Ta Moan Thom Temple. This act of aggression is not just a violation of peace — it is a violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty, dignity and right to exist in harmony.
This attack is not an isolated case. It reflects a broader pattern of Thai behavior that contradicts their official claims of peace and cooperation. While Thai authorities speak of diplomacy, their actions on the ground — through their military and even civilians — speak a language of violence, intimidation and territorial ambition. Assaulting a Cambodian soldier on Cambodian soil is not just a provocation; it is an act of hostility that cannot and will not be ignored.
Cambodia does not want war. Cambodia has consistently chosen the path of peace, law and international mechanisms to resolve disputes. From the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to diplomatic negotiations, Cambodia has always sought peaceful means to defend its borders and heritage.
But Thailand’s repeated provocations, military intrusions and now physical assaults are testing the limits of that peaceful approach. This incident at Ta Moan Thom Temple reminds the world that it is Thailand that initiates tension, breaks trust and fans the flames of conflict.
The world is watching. The international community must not remain silent. Violence, especially at a archeological and religious value like Ta Moan Thom Temple, is unacceptable. This sacred Khmer temple is not a battleground — it is a monument to civilisation, not destruction.
If any conflict breaks out in the days to come, history will record clearly: It was Thailand who struck first. It was Thailand who chose provocation over peace. It was Thailand who violated international norms and disrespected Cambodia’s sovereignty.
Cambodia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet, will continue to uphold peace, protect our borders and pursue justice through international law. But our patience should not be mistaken for weakness.
We call on the Thai government to take responsibility for today’s violent act. Punish those involved. Respect the border. And stop the provocations before it is too late.
Let the world remember: Cambodia stands for peace, Thailand chooses provocation.
